yeah, that's my koi pond (the water feature you didn't like), and the fish trapped under the ice.

You need to cut a hole in your ice, so the water won't stagnate on their CO2. My fish are doing okay, but I'm having to cut a hole every 8 hours... out of the new inch of ice that fucking forms!

the pump is still running, so the waterfall is still falling, keeping the water oxygenated and some open water.

Pond Heaters FTW.

I have a plastic one that just keeps a hole in the ice open. $40.

I wonder what amount of energy this requires vs using a pump to keep the water flowing.

not a bad idea, actually. do you remember its power usage?

I don't remember. I also use one in my outdoor pump (pumps rainwater from a storage bin to the lake behind my house).

I think it is something like a 100 watt lightbulb. It only works at certain temps.

I use a thermo plug with it.

What kind of filter do you need to store rainwater properly and what kind of pump is best coupled with a rainwater tank?

I don't store it.

Rain comes down my gutters and is sent directly to a sump tank. The tank has a sump pump and pushes the water directly out to the lake. No filter needed.

I built this solution because the gutters for the length of my house dumped directly next to my house and I always had standing water plus seepage into my basement. I redirected the water to the tank which I put 6' deep in the ground next to my house (I have an access to it). The pond heater keeps the top of the tank from freezing and keeps the float from the sump pump working properly.

I am basically diverting the rain water to the lake.
