Full Version: Minty jump worth it?

Ok, I have been a linux user for quite awhile. My preference has been kubuntu for the past year or so.

Then I upgraded to 9.10. Shit, I mainly use kaffeine on the long bus ride and the 1.0 pre-2 version sucks sweaty balls. You cannot deinterlace and jumping past all the previews with pgdn got hosed again. I understand they are pushing for qt4, but shit, now my favourite dvd software sucks.

What the heck, I would downgrade and now it is all fucked. (I am not a newbie, it just wont go back to 0.8.6)

Ok, I figure Mint will make it easy for me, but a few questions for those of you using it...

What is the dvd playback software? Does it have the menus like kaffiene used to?
How well does it detect wwan cards? I use a Verizon usb wwan card and would like for it to work. I can easily enough get it to work if it is not auto configured, would just prefer it did work out of the box.

My main concern is the dvd playback. I have been through multiple distros and have installed the w32codecs and libdvdcss2 many times. It is easy enough. My main reason for choosing mint is that it is supposed to be easier and cut down on the time I am fiddling with the laptop.

TIA.

Have you tried other media players? VLC perhaps?

Meh. Yes. I have used them, they work. I prefer the menus that the "old" kaffeine had.

No go.

Wiped out the Kubuntu install on a whim and installed ubuntu. Then realized no kaffeine (except what is in repository). Doh!

That is ok, I am going to try mint.

I liked Mint. This is for sure what I'm installing in the future on slower machines and typing/surfing computers.

You should like it fine, it's what I recommend to people that want to try Linux out. DVD support OOTB.

Skin it like Windows! I plan on doing that for reticent users. My uncle is test driving OpenOffice. If it lets him manipulate excel spreadsheets and word documents properly, Windows can kiss goodbye.

Dude I am sorry to hear about that. I've been on Ubuntu 8.04 for like 2 years and I have dealt with all kinds of hair-pulling bullshit. Recently virtualbox decided to shit out on me when I upgrade the headers.

At least we don't get spyware tho.

In the server end of things I still use Ubuntu. I like it as a server OS. We even have a few v-box servers out there, but I like VMware more than vbox. Less issues like that.

I got Mint on the bar computer. The installed software plays almost everything (no real media support) that we throw at it. The biggest issue I have is I wish mp3 radio streams opened in player of some sort and not in Firefox--which is something I'm sure I could change.

Remove the mp3 plugin from firefox or edit your mime settings. I did just that for PDFs.

I'll get to that eventually.
