Do any of you know how to set up a website that generates pages dynamically from a database? I asked about doing this a while ago, looked into it and realized that it's above my head, and I don't have the time to learn how to do it.

I'm willing to pay to have someone help set this up for me. It's pretty basic what I want and I don't think it would be that hard. I just want to be able to update a spreadsheet on my computer here, upload it to the site, and have that translate into 200 or so different pages online. One for each of the bathhouses I've reviewed.

Doable?

Anyone up for doing it? How much do you think it would cost or how much would you like to be paid?

umm... what you're asking isn't very basic or simple.

you'll need a database, something to receive an xls upload, parse the xls, insert the data from the xls into the database (in probably html compatible format).

if there are pictures, that is an additional complication as the images would most likely have to be kept in a separate database table, but still associated with the appropriate review.

to view the webpages the server has to have some way to poll the database to see which reviews were available, hit the database for a particular review, and render the text and images in a comprehensible format.

And will this be in Engrish or Nipponese?

and what is available from your webhost in technology? MySQL? PHP? Java? etc.

I could probably do it. However, there's no way I could guess as to how much time it will take. If java isn't available, i have no idea as to how to read and parse data from an xls file.

Here's the original post. Zuddy mentioned Joomia as a way to do it.

English and Japanese so it would have to be UTF-8 or something that supports Japanese fonts.

PHP only... I have the beginner account here, although I guess I could upgrade to get the SQL support.

I doubt there would be a way to do this without SQL.

As for photos there will be a few on each page.

I can create you static web pages from an excel spreadsheet using home made macros. It's very simple for me.

Dynamic stuff is not simple, starting with a spreadsheet.

Do you want to try out Joomla? I can install it in a jiffy on my domain through the tools provided by Go Daddy.

Thanks but I finally found my answer!

File Maker Pro + WebMerge, Perfect!

WebMerge 2.1

You don't need an expensive, complicated database system to generate a Web site populated with massive amounts of data -- especially if the site doesn't need to be linked to a live database. Fourth World Media's WebMerge 2.1 lets you quickly generate dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of Web pages based on the contents of a FileMaker Pro database, Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, or just about any other application that can export delimited text files.

I've got a spreadsheet with 150 or so entries for all of the hot springs i've been to.

Each entry has about 20 data fields ranging from address to well temperature, to the review itself.

That software linked above, along with Bento (a lite version of File Maker Pro) would be able to do it all. Hopefully in Bento 4 there will be an html export option too.

Anyhow it's perfect for what I want to do.

I'm curious about that, because I've been asked to be the head nerd for the saddle club again. There should be an easier way to manage data from show results, but I'll just be damned as to how it can be done.
